Frequently asked questions

Is deleted data really unrecoverable?
On traditional hard drives (HDDs), yes — once the bytes are overwritten, file-recovery and forensic tools have nothing to reconstruct. See the SSD note below.

I use an SSD / NVMe drive. Does it still work?
ZeroTrace still shreds and cleans on SSDs, but because of how SSDs relocate data internally (wear-leveling), overwriting isn’t a *hardware* guarantee on any SSD-based tool. For a hard guarantee on an SSD, enable **BitLocker** — ZeroTrace even detects your drive type and tells you when this applies. (This is true of every overwrite tool; we’re just honest about it.)

Will it delete the wrong files?
It only ever acts on files *you* delete or select, and you can whitelist protected folders. Still, it permanently destroys data — keep backups and test on throwaway files first.

Does it slow down my PC?
